Professor Mazzucato researches and influences the ways in which health innovation can be mission-oriented to realise major advances in areas of unmet health needs, and designed to realize the cross-sectoral goal of health for all. The WHO Council on the Economics of Health for All, which she chairs, asks how economies can be designed to deliver on this goal. This requires measuring and valuing what matters for people and planet, ensuring long-term and better quality finance for health – and treating funding for health as a long-term investment rather than a cost, redesigning the patent system and the relationship between the public and private sectors in the health innovation system, and mobilizing a whole of government approach that recognizes health as a cross-cutting priority and not only the responsibility of health ministries.
