Welcome, I’m a Professor in the Economics of Innovation and Public Value, University College London (UCL), where I'm establishing a new Institute for Innovation and Public Purpose. My work is focused on the economics of innovation; finance and economic growth; and the role of the State in modern capitalism.

I have advised policy makers around the world on how to achieve economic growth that is 'smart' and inclusive. My research is currently funded by two large grants from the European Commission’s Horizon 2020 programme: ISIGrowth on innovation policy and Dolfins on financial reform. My book, The Entrepreneurial State: debunking public vs. private sector myths, challenges the image of the lethargic, regulating state versus the dynamic business sector—using historical examples to show public sector investments sparked technological revolutions. It offers a new way of thinking about political economy in the 21st century.

My latest book is Rethinking Capitalism: Economics and Policy for Sustainable and Inclusive Growth, co-edited with Michael Jacobs.

Mission thinking: a problem-solving approach to fuel innovation-led growth

Mission thinking: a problem-solving approach to fuel innovation-led growth

The world is afflicted by problems that people experience in their daily lives: clean air in congested cities, a healthy and independent life in old age, access to digital technologies that improve public services, and treatment of diseases like cancer or obesity that continue to afflict millions of people across the globe.
What is the relationship between these problems and the dynamics of science, research and innovation? Of course we all recognise that science is needed to produce medicines, but what is the role of research and innovation in producing a more ‘caring’ society and solutions to health care systems?
