The event considered the following questions:

  • What exactly is meant by ‘industrial policy’
  • What is the role of government in helping to create jobs and growth? How can government ensure that the right infrastructure is in place and that R & D and innovation are incentivized?
  • Isn’t there a risk that a new style industrial policy could fall into the same ‘picking winners’ traps as old style industrial policy? What are the bear traps that should be avoided? Can we learn from previous attempts at industrial policy in the UK?
  • How can government ensure than an industrial policy doesn’t mean micromanagement and diminishing the creative economic potential of market forces?
  • What lessons can be learned from abroad.
