Welcome, I’m a Professor in the Economics of Innovation and Public Value and Director of the Institute for Innovation and Public Purpose at University College London (UCL). My work is focused on the economics of innovation; finance and economic growth; and the role of the State in modern capitalism.

I have advised policy makers around the world on how to achieve economic growth that is 'smart' and inclusive. My research is currently funded by two large grants from the European Commission’s Horizon 2020 programme: ISIGrowth on innovation policy and Dolfins on financial reform. My book, The Entrepreneurial State: debunking public vs. private sector myths, challenges the image of the lethargic, regulating state versus the dynamic business sector—using historical examples to show public sector investments sparked technological revolutions. It offers a new way of thinking about political economy in the 21st century.

My latest book is Rethinking Capitalism: Economics and Policy for Sustainable and Inclusive Growth, co-edited with Michael Jacobs.

The Brexit-Trump Syndrome: it’s the economics, stupid

The Brexit-Trump Syndrome: it’s the economics, stupid

The election of Donald Trump, and the Brexit vote in the UK, have both been widely interpreted as a revolt of the economically ‘left behind’: a protest by working class voters at the impact of globalisation on their jobs and living standards. In neither case is this the whole explanation: in both the UK and US, plenty of people on higher incomes and in wealthy areas voted for the insurgent movement. But there can be little doubt that in Michigan and Merthr Tydfil, South Carolina and Sunderland, the disaffection of people on below-average incomes drove the outcome.
